During a September morning, VIA Rail train 185 with RDC-4 6250 and RDC-2 6205 pause to load passengers and camping equipment at the Sudbury, Ontario station. The pair of RDC’s will soon depart Sudbury on the Cartier Subdivision for White River.

I remember coming home from school and getting a phone call from a friend saying that I needed to get down to the station immediately. My first thought was that there were possibly some CN detours over the Guelph Subdivision, however he informed me that the old CN boxcars across from the station were being prepared to be scrapped on site that afternoon.

A short drive later and the scene was as expected, with big equipment from London-based John Zubick making quick work of each boxcar. For as long as I was a kid, those boxcars had been a part of the railway scene in Kitchener and were used as storage by local CN maintenance of way workers and carmen. While taking in the scene as each boxcar was systematically sheared open by the equipment and turned into pieces, one such memory comes to mind. As the excavator dug deep into one of the boxcars it removed an almost pristine wooden CNR railway crossing sign still attached to its post that had been long stored inside. Within seconds…chomp, chomp chomp. Even after three decades, remembering that still stings a little.

Here, CN 519983 meets its fate across from the Kitchener station. While this one had the CN noodle, several of the other boxcars scrapped that day had their original CN maple leaf logos.

The typical weekday for the CP Guelph local’s crew was to switch the small yard and the nearby lumber yard at Guelph Jct. during the morning. This occurred after all the weekly morning GO Transit sets departed eastbound for Toronto. After its work at Guelph Jct. was completed the job would depart westbound on the Galt Subdivision to Puslinch to service the transload that was situated beside the siding and mainline. At the time, this track (G90), was quite active with several different companies depending on it for rail service. They included; GE Phillips Forwarding, Central Ontario Transfer, Orica Canada and the Upper Canada Stone Company. Following its work here, the crew would return to Guelph Jct. where they would complete any additional switching prior to departing for Guelph if required with usually a small train.

Here during a frigid sunny winter day, CP GP7u 1501 is pictured working the transload track which was quite full at the time.

A frigid winter day sees CP GP38AC 3010 with a long string of motive power at Quebec Street yard in London, Ontario. The other units included; C-424 4237, GP9u’s 8237, 8205, 8208, 8211 and 8226. Also, on hand were SD40 5405 and SW1200RSu 1240. At the time, seeing a GP38AC on the London Division was quite rare as not many wandered down from Western Canada.

CN power is viewed idling in the Brantford, Ontario yard over the weekend with the station in the background. It includes; GP9RM’s 7030 and 7035 as well as GP40-2L(W) 9458. At the time, the Burford Spur was still active to Burford and all of Brantford’s active rail customers were serviced from this yard.

CN GP9RM 4129 is pictured waiting between assignments during a mid-week afternoon in front of the Kitchener, Ontario station. More than 30 years later, 4129 is still active today working on jobs in the eastern Ontario and Quebec area.

CN train 560 with GP40-2L(W)’s 9424 and 9508 are seen passing through Onondaga, Ontario as they head to Nanticoke on the CN Hagersville Subdivision from Brantford. This was the usual mid-90’s power for this assignment as it was typically powered by two or three GP40-2L(W)’s.

“Return to Temagami Ontario When Empty” stamped on CN "barrel" ore car #346074 is still visible as the iron-ore hopper awaits the scrappers torch at the CN S Yard in Vaughan, Ontario. The car was one of hundreds of freight cars that were scrapped at the yard, which was located at MacMillan Yard near the Highway 7 overpass. Today the yard is long gone, and the site is part of a large transload facility.

During a pleasant fall afternoon, the CN 15:30 Kitchener Job is busy switching the large Budd automotive frame plant in Kitchener, Ontario with GP9RM 4131. Every weekday afternoon, the job would traverse the Huron Park Spur to service the plant, lifting the loaded frame cars and setting-off the empty flatcars.

CN train 555 with GP9RM’s 4143 and 4112 are pictured working the Paris pit trackage along the Dundas Subdivision. On this day they had van 79437 and would eventually depart caboose hop to Brantford after their work was completed.

While waiting for a CN westbound by Old Guelph Road near Hamilton West, at Mile 1 of the Dundas Subdivision, we heard a CP ballast train departing Hamilton on the scanner. With the late September evening light slowly starting to fade, we decided to photograph it nearby from where we were as much of the Hamilton Subdivision would already be shadowed in.

Here CP GP9u 8200 and SOO Line SD40-2 6608 lead a northbound ballast train around the curve approaching the over/under with the Dundas Subdivision. The power had just crossed the bridge over the QEW as evidenced by the large telephone poles in the background.

CP train 521 is viewed passing the site of the future downtown Hamilton, Ontario GO Transit Centre at the former Toronto Hamilton & Buffalo Railway (TH&B) station. At the time, construction was ongoing for the modern facility to open the following year on April 30, 1996. Also, the train is passing a new signal bridge that was already installed, however not functioning yet. 521 operated daily from Binghamton New York to Toronto and was powered by SD40 5409, GP9u 8209, RS18u 1803 and RS18u 1848.

A horse watches as a morning westbound CP train approaches Canyon Road, east of Campbellville, Ontario at Mile 37 on the Galt Subdivision. Light was certainly not as favorable compared to the eastbound we were waiting for, however in the 90’s during the CP lease fleet era, every train was usually worthy of one photo. The consist included; SD40-2 5860, HLCX GP40 662 and CP SD40 740. HLCX 662 was ex-Amtrak 662, ex- SOO Line 2007 and nee-Milwaukee Road 2007.

CN GP9RM 4132 and caboose 79513 are pictured awaiting their next assignment at Kitchener, Ontario across from the VIA Rail station and CN office. It likely would be that day’s 15:30 Job and a trip to the Budd Plant on the Huron Park Spur.

CP’s Aberdeen Yard in Hamilton, Ontario is a long way from Roseville, California, however HATX 923, which began life as Southern Pacific SD45 8807, is seen still proudly displaying its home shop designation despite being in the employ of a new owner. Now a part of CP’s massive mid-90’s lease fleet, HATX 923 is rubbing shoulders with CP C-424 4226, both awaiting their departures from Aberdeen Yard. Behind HATX 923 is CP SD40-2 5901 and trailing 4226 are SD40-2 786, leased Conrail SD40 0809, GP9u 8248 and C-424 4216.

A southbound CP train is paused at Kinnear Yard in Hamilton, Ontario awaiting a crew change. The consist included; SD40-2 6034, HLCX SD40 4057 and CP SD40-2 783. HLCX 4057, is ex-UP 4057, ex-MP 3057 and nee-MP 757.

CN GP9RM 4142 and SW1200RSm 7105 are catching the first morning light of the day at the CN yard in Niagara Falls, Ontario. In later years, 7105 became CANAC Leasing (CANX) 7105 and was sent to the US to work at a Cargill facility in Bridgeport, Iowa. CN 4142 was retired in August 2001.
